Terrific Tram Trip!

On Wednesday our class took a trip to Roosevelt Island. We even got to take a ride on the tram to get there! While on the tram, we tried to pay close attention to how the tram worked and how it moved. After our ride on the tram, we stopped at a park on Roosevelt Island to draw pictures of the some things we observed. Back in our classroom on Friday we experimented with different materials (pulleys, rope, weights) in an attempt to make a working model of a tram. Different groups came up with different methods of making their trams move. Check out some of our models below!

Piers, Buildings, Sand and Rock

We went to Coney Island yesterday. We drew pictures of the pier and then built models back home. We tested our models on the classroom floor and in a box of sand. When the models were standing in sand, they sunk in and fell. On the floor, it was easier to get them to stand up and support weight. Wonder what kind of ground is beneath all those heavy skyscrapers in Manhattan...
